Today, American kids are getting bigger and bigger, becoming overweight or obese. Every year the level or percent increases since 1980. It has become one of the top health threats in the society. The good news is the rise in percentage has leveled off or become steady lately. Why is this so? According to the recent studies, parents and schools have been conscious about the issue. They have managed to change the kids’ eating habits for the better. Not to mention that exercise become significant lately. However, a decline of this number is still needed.

As parents, you ought to take part in decreasing the percentage by taking good care of your kids and their eating habit. In order to help you children avoid obesity, consider the following:

Food. The number one reason that causes the weight problem. Not because food companies tell you that their edible products are for children, it does not follow that you should let them eat them. Worse yet, companies tell you that they are healthy. Give your kids the right healthy foods in their right amount. It is not enough to make them eat what is nutritious, but you also have to take note of the portions you are giving them.

Exercise. Start them young. It’s not about literally taking them to the gym and let them work out. You could be creative by making them take a sport, or perhaps, a little reminded that a quick jog or stretch will do. Also, you have to set an example. You have to exercise as well so your little kids will follow and they will think that exercising is always part of the daily activities.

Sleep. Rest plays a very important role in weight control and maintenance. You have to make sure that your children will have the proper amount of sleep. Don’t let them watch TV or play video game for too long. Having a good night sleep will also help them rise early in the morning.

Extra Activities. You could encourage your kids to join activities after school hours. For instance, you could enroll them in some sport lessons. They can have fun, at the same time, they can train their body to be constantly active.

Self Concept. You have to educate your kids about staying healthy and being fit. If your kid is already big, don’t tell him or her that it’s bad to be big. Try the other way of encouraging them to be fit. Never try to attack their self-esteem. Never mention that they are too fat or big. Instead, emphasize of telling them to be healthy.

Somehow, parents cause the weight problem of their kids. They think that fast foods are fun, and that kids love it. What makes children happy is important, that is why parents give in. It should not be the case. Parents should always become the authority as well as example. This is the time to reconsider what is inside your refrigerator, because the unnecessary eating begins from there.
